OK, guitar players, let’s be honest. We’re all looking for “that sound.” I’ve owned I-don’t-know-how-many amps (maybe you have too!) in search of it. Several years ago, my friend and Guitar Summit partner Rich Severson showed me his Quilter Microcab 200-8. I was knocked out!
This is a 200 watt combo amp, with an 8-inch speaker! I couldn’t believe the flexibility, and the sound. From the manual: “Our goal: preserve and expand the classic tones that define the electric guitar while giving the professional musician a reliable, efficient, lightweight amplifier powerful enough to play any gig.” They nailed it.Two channels, tons of tone shaping control, different voicing settings, mic input, XLR direct out (that actually sounds good!) and tons more. And…I can lift it up with my left pinky! Seriously.
I’ve used with with big bands, small combo gigs, in every kind of venue. The direct out sounds great going into the house system. It makes traveling, setting up (and tearing down) so easy. The matching extension cab really turns this into a monster! I love it so much I had Fresno City College buy one for their music department (where I was Jazz Studies Director…it’s good to be king sometimes.) 🙂
The successor to the MicroCab is their Mach 2, which comes in 8″, 10″, and 12″ speaker configurations. I’ve played those, too, and would grab one up in a heartbeat if anything happened to my MicroCab. The successor is the Mach 2, which I also like. I o keep my eye out for used Microcab 8s… I now own three.
