A lot of directors have told me that the rhythm section is where they feel the least comfortable. Understandable, since a ) most directors aren’t rhythm section players, and b) rhythm section parts often use their own symbols and lingo (“What notes to play for F7(#9)? What’s up with these slash marks? The comping doesn’t sound right!”) Plus, many young rhythm section players did not come up through their school’s band program, and may not have had much prior experience or private lessons.
