Description
If you are looking for a contemporary fusion/funk chart to show off (and challenge!) your band, check out Going To Eleven. It features your tenor soloist, plus your guitarist (or any other rhythm section soloist. It’s in 11/4 (no surprise there), with enough angular melodies, quirky rhythms, and edgy harmonies to keep your players honest. 🙂 Scored for 5 saxes (SATTB), 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm, plus optional (but cool!) parts for flute, vibes/percussion, and electric violin (!)
Many thanks to Chris Stevens, director of the Long Beach Polytechnic High School Jazz Ensemble, for commissioning this piece. He asked for something that would challenge his students. I asked him “How challenging? On a 1 to 10 scale?” He said “10.” So I went to 11. We are still friends 🙂
(Title acknowledgement also goes to Spinal Tap.) 🙂
