Description

Nat Adderley’s Work Song has become a jazz standard. Deservedly so—it has a memorable melody and a soulful groove. It’s a great tune for developing improvisers, too. This chart was written with younger bands in mind, with easy brass ranges, 3 trumpets and 3 trombones, notated rhythm section parts. It’s in a half-time swing-funk groove that alternates with straight-ahead swing. The “hipness-to-work-required” ratio is really good on this one–it sounds GREAT, and does not require tons of fine-tuning.
