Elysian Shore

$75.00

Description

Commissioned by David Beatty for the Azusa Pacific University Jazz Ensemble.

Elysian Shore is a contemporary ballad, featuring a mature trumpet/flugel soloist. The tune itself can stand alone, but it also includes a beautiful prologue and epilogue, featuring your woodwinds.

After the lush prologue, the flugel introduces the melody, which is supported by colorful textures and intriguing harmonies. The solo section is a very loose double time feel, ending with a return to the original feel and a recap of the melody. An extended coda begins with an obstinate, then builds to the surprising and tranquil epilogue.

Doubles: alto 1/oboe, alto 2/flute, tenor 1/clarinet, tenor 2/bassoon, bari/bass clarinet. The APU band had these great woodwind colors to explore, and I wasn’t going to miss that opportunity. 🙂 If you love the chart but do not have those specific doubles, contact me here and I can easily adapt a woodwind part to fit your instrumentation.

On a personal note, this is one of my favorite pieces. If you have a strong trumpet soloist, mature rhythm section, and some solid woodwind doubles, Elysian Shore would be a great addition to your library.
